Title: Standing Still

7" x 10"

Ink, watercolor.

The past is gone. The future is coming.  Everything is motion, change, instability.  What does it mean to stand still?

At first the picture appeared very sad and hopeless to me. But while taking a closer look at the harmonic flow of the translucent waft of dark blue mist that seems to be washed away by the light and the foreleaning pose of the figure I saw more than that. The dark mist might represent the mournful past that is cast away by a eventually brighter future filled with hope and joy. The complementary contrast between orange and dark blue only underlines their disparity. If you set stronger highlights and shadows this would come off even better (more suspense). Leaning against the general flow in the picture and standing at the border of light and dark the girl is set at the centre of attention  Positioning her a litle more to left (accordingly to the rule of thirds) can bring more balance to the picture. Her expression seems sad, thoughtful and serious. What might she be thinking about? The loved ones, the dreams and life she lost? About a rescue, taking revenge or the next step into her new life? She might stagger and fall into the shadows of her past or look up and keep going. Its for her to decide. You created an ambivalent artwork that has so much to say :) Great job! Keep going :happybounce:

Thank you for your thoughtful comments.  I am glad you got so much out of it.  There is certainly darkness present, but I like to think there is resistance and endurance as well.

No problem. People that have their demons lurking in the shadows usually have a hard time expression what it's like having them there. Or they don't know how to calm those demons down. I've had to deal with my own demons for a while now. This expressive image really shows how my demons just lurk there in the shadows; trying to come to life.

People ask me about my depression - what I see here is a great illustration of that
dark beast lying in wait and in one minutes time engulfs me.

It's not an easy state of being to express.  There are shadows that are present, even in the light.  They may be depression, or other challenges.  That is definitely a big part of what motivated this drawing.  There's also a defiance of those shadows, even when they are attached to us and made more potent by the good things.  One always wishes to be able to step forward and shake free of it all, but sometimes it is all we can do to stand still and not be carried away.  Sometimes that's enough.

Oh - I agree 100%! Just to hold your ground can inspire to make it
even better the next time. You've got a great insight there..now that I'm retired
I need to find an opportunity to share or council with those who've been though this or
new to dealing with it.
Thanks for the reply..
Take Care.

Perhaps, while standing still, a person can see what happened and be a bit more informed about what will happen.
OR, better yet, be aware of what's happening now.
